Sports coaches are in a unique position to impact their team members. As leaders, they can change the way their team plays but more importantly, change the way they approach the world. The best coaches have different techniques, but at the core of their program are three main points. Understanding these points and integrating them into your coaching plan will make you a better leader and a better coach.

  1. Know The Score – no matter what they call you, you are their coach, their leader. As such, it is critical that you live up to that role. You are not there as their best friends or their shrink. You are their coach. It is your job to teach them to play on the field and to do it well. Don’t every forget what role you are playing.
  2. Listen Up – The best coaches can to listen to their players. They don’t spend most of their time yelling about a bad game or practice. Instead, they use the opportunity to question their players about the game and what worked and what didn’t. Listen to your players.
  3. Believe It – Every coach has a plan, but the best coaches can translate that plan into something their players can believe in. Whether you call in motivation or pep talks, you have to find a way to make your players believe in their own strengths and the strength of the team. You have to believe it.

Know where you stand, listen to your players, and teach them to believe.  You will be the best coach they ever had.
